In 1872 or there about, Aaron Montgomery Ward, who had established the Montgomery Ward company, went a step further and began publishing a catalog. Then there was the Penney's catalog with beautiful colored pictures of everything anyone could ever want. And, who could forget the Sears wish book.
When the weather began to turn cold, it was obvious that Christmas was just around the corner. I would wait impatiently for the mail man to bring our catalogs. When they arrived, I immediately began flipping through the pages carefully marking everything that I wanted Santa to leave under our tree. Of course, most of the markings were useless but Mother usually ordered something for me to open on Christmas.
My
husband loves to recall one Christmas when he was small. It seems his
mother had ordered something for him and when Christmas came, it hadn't
come.
"Little John, Santa is going to be a little late this year for some reason. But, don't worry, he will be here with it soon".
Of course, Little John was disappointed. How could Santa forget him on Christmas? Day after day he wondered when Santa would be coming to his house.
Little John and his parents lived in a one room house. One evening as his mom, dad and he were sitting at the supper table, his dad got up; went over to the bed and all of a sudden a sound came trickling toward Little John....rrrrrr...rrrrr....rrrrr...rrrrr..rrrr.... Little John looked up wondering what that could be. He jumped up and out from under the bed came a toy caterpillar in all of it's glory!! Little John was one excited little man! Santa hadn't forgotten him after all.
Do we wait with anticipation the return of that One who was born on Christmas day? Oh, we hear people say just as Little John's mother had, "Don't worry, He will be here soon." But, do we really believe that? If we truly believed, wouldn't we be sharing the story of the Christ child that was wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger?
"Anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.
But how shall they ask him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?" Romans 10:13-14 (TLB)
