The Day After Christmas

"It's the day after Christmas. The glow on the tree is just a little dimmer because the anticipation of the day is now past. Ever feel that way about your walk with the Lord? But, the best is yet to be! Christmas Day is past, but Resurrection Day is coming soon, and I don't mean Easter. I mean the Second Coming of Our Lord is imminently on the horizon. He is coming again." Dr Adrian Rogers

Our society looks for every reason to celebrate; have a day off from work or have a big party. We celebrate Easter with a bunny and Halloween, which was originally All Saints Day, has been turned into outlandish costumes and begging for candy. Christmas is Santa Claus with hardly a mention of the Babe of Bethlehem. Even New Years is considered by some religions to be a holy day honoring Mother Mary. But, for most, it's just another day off to "gluttonize" ourselves and watch football and party like there is no tomorrow. I wonder what would happen if those of us who are Believers refused to desecrate the holidays?

I'm not against celebrating. I just think we should celebrate the right things. We can have Christmas with gifts and family and food as long as it's not the main reason we celebrate. I love getting together with our family for Christmas. In fact, I'm known as the one who starts after the Fourth of July trying to figure out all the "whens and wheres" for our family Christmas. But, I'm as guilty as the next person at forgetting the reason for the season. Perhaps we should celebrate the Christian holidays as they were meant to be celebrated. And, then invent some secular holidays. Of course, we are not to be just Christians on Christian holidays and Sundays, but everyday.

"Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but be a new and different person with a fresh newness in all you do and think. Then you will learn from your own experience how his ways will really satisfy you." Romans 12:2 (TLB)
